A Glorious Spring Day

OK, the weather over the past few weeks hasn’t exactly been fantastic, but we desperately needed the rain, so no-one here was going to complain.

We were extremely well rewarded today with what could only be described as a glorious Spring Day.

Looking Out Over The Front Paddock
Looking Out Over The Front Paddock

The sun was out, the birds were foraging amongst the native shrubs, the alpaca were sun baking in the morning sun, the dams are edging towards being full and the grass in the paddocks is starting to show some green after a long dry spell.

Being such a lovely day and finishing work a little early, I decided to take the dogs for a walk up the hill to check the amount of feed about and have a general look about.  Poor Rags is still recovering from a recent stint at the vets, so we all took it pretty slow and easy getting up ‘that hill’.

Whilst I was up there, I decided to check out the area we call ‘The Gum Grove”, the top corner of the back paddock which we fenced off over three years ago and planted nearly 100 native trees.

As we have been experiencing long periods of drought over the past two or three years, a few of the trees have not survived, but those that have are going gang-busters.

The trees include Silky Oak, Tasmanian Blue Gum, Tallowood, Ironbark, River Red Gum, Callistemon and a stack of other natives.  There are even a couple of self seeded trees from the surrounding area.

The area will remain fenced off for a few years yet, to ensure that the smaller of the trees have a chance to get fully established before the cows are allowed to trample through the area.

So if you get the chance to stay at Sanctuary Hill Retreat, be sure to dedicate a half hour or more to take the walk up the hill and check out some of the more hidden elements of our efforts.  The view from up there is pretty amazing too.

Lilly Pillies and Other Winter Landscaping

Ok, it’s time to confess – We like Lilly Pillies.

Infact some of the first shrubs planted after we purchased the property where three Lilly Pillies that we transferred up with us from Sydney.  These are now pride of place in the “valley garden” in the main house yard.

Since then, we have planted many more.  Three sides of the spa deck are surrounded by two variety of Lilly Pilly, being “Cherry Surprise” and “Cascade”.  These were all planted three years ago, and have become very established.

At the same time, we also planted about two dozen Acmenia “Firescreen” around the visitor carpark.  We trim these to an informal hedge at a high of about seven feet and love the privacy and definition that they provide to the front gardens.

We like this informal hedge so much that we decided to head back up to Abundance Lifestyle and Garden to get another two dozen shrubs to plant along the front fenceline.

I’m looking forward to watching these new shrubs establish into a lush hence to further define our front yard and tie these areas together a bit more.

We had a few plants left over, so extended the hedge around the visitor carpark to provide more privacy and definition to that area.

Whilst I are writing about landscaping, there have also been a few more noticeable changes over the past few months.  We have started updating the area outside of the entrance gates.  Work has started with the building of very large and somewhat impressive rock towers either side of the driveway.  Sitting on top of the towers are nice big planter pots which we have put a couple of bougainvillea plants (another of our favourite shrubs).   Hopefully these plants will cascade over the pots and down and over the rock towers.

Over the coming weeks, we will extend the little gardens either side of the gates to encompass the rock towers, and the existing garden and signage on the left hand side.

We are also very pleased to report that the local council has done some major work on resurfacing Watsons Road.  They worked over two days to drop load after load of new gravel over the 2 kilometers of road, with most of that going into the last 800 meters to our property.

We have also had a local contractor tidy up the sides of the last stretch of road up to our gate.  We have planted out a new tree line on each side of the road, with the aim of creating a nice shaded boulevard approaching the property.

Until next time, thanks for reading.
